At the heart of Paris for over a century, the Maison de l'Océan is a well-preserved gem of the city's architectural heritage.
Ground floor
From the entrance, the reception hall opens onto the most emblematic spaces of the Maison de l’Océan. The Grand Amphitheatre, adorned with frescoes recounting the expeditions of Prince Albert I, sits alongside conference, meeting and exhibition rooms. A place for encounters and for passing on knowledge, true to its scientific calling since 1911.

The history & heritage of the place
A pioneer of modern oceanography, Prince Albert I understood at the end of the 19th century that a place dedicated to the study and teaching of the Seas had to be created. He chose a site close to the Sorbonne and called on the architect Henri-Paul Nénot to erect a spectacular building, inaugurated in 1911. Three chairs were created, each with its own laboratory: Physical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Physiology of Marine Life.
The ocean hub in Paris
For its centenary, the Institut océanographique was renamed the Maison de l'Océan. Together with the Musée océanographique de Monaco, it brings together scientific, political, economic and community stakeholders to, in the words of its motto, help everyone “know, love and protect the Ocean”.
