The history & heritage of the place

A pioneer of the new ocean science, Prince Albert I understood at the end of the 19th century that a place dedicated to its study and teaching had to be created. He chose a site close to the Sorbonne and called on the architect Henri-Paul Nénot: the Institut océanographique was inaugurated in 1911.
